“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” 1 John 3:1 (NIV)

Devotion Graphic

I became a Christian when I was a teenager. But even after I made a commitment to follow Christ, feelings of inferiority, insecurity and inadequacy held me hostage. The dirge of “I’m not good enough” was a song I couldn’t get out of my head. The lies of the enemy kept me fenced in and kept God’s best at bay.

I felt I was always disappointing God and certainly a disappointment to myself. I tried the best I could to be the best I could be, but, in my mind, I always fell short.

So I settled into a stagnant faith, a safe faith, a stuck faith with other defeated believers who falsely saw themselves through a filter of past sins and failures, rather than through the lens of their new identity in Christ.

After high school, I went to college where I met and married an awesome Christian man. About four years later, I became a mom. Life was good, except for this termite-like gnawing in my gut that I just didn’t quite measure up to all the other church-moms with their smiling faces.

I walked around with the fear that one day I would be found out — that one day, folks would figure out I wasn’t all I was cracked up to be. I lived under an undefined, self-imposed standard of approval.

Childhood echoes of “you’re so ugly” and “what’s wrong with you” and “you can’t do anything right” left me feeling congenitally flawed. I sat in Bible study groups like someone in a hospital waiting room: hoping for the best but expecting the worst. My greatest fear was that I’d be no closer to being free of the insecurity than before the study began.

In my mid-30s, I sat under the teaching of an older woman in my church. She opened my eyes to the truths in Scripture about who I was as a Christ-follower, what I had, and where I was (my position) as a child of God. I’d read those verses scattered throughout Scripture before, but when she encouraged me to cluster them together into one list, God began a new work in my heart.

You are chosen.
You are dearly loved.
You are holy.

These truths were right there on the pages of my Bible in black and white and a few in red.

You are a saint.
You are free from condemnation through Christ’s death.
You have the mind of Christ.
You can do all things through Christ.

I knew the verses were the infallible Word of God, but I felt rather squeamish hearing them, reading them and believing them.

While I was studying about my true identity, the devil taunted me with accusations: “Who do you think you are? A saint? Are you kidding? This stuff might be true for some people, but it certainly isn’t true about you.”

One day, I felt God asking me an important question: “Who are you going to believe?”

I was at a crossroads, one you might be standing at this very moment. Was I going to believe God and begin seeing myself as God saw me, or was I going to continue believing the lies of the enemy and the echoes of my past? Was I going to remain stuck in a stagnant faith because I was too insecure to take a step toward the abundant life Jesus had promised, or was I going to march confidently around the walls of my inadequacies until they came tumbling down?

Finally I prayed, Dear God, I’m going to believe who You say I am. I don’t feel it. I can barely think it. But I’m going to believe Your Word is true for me and about me.

And that’s what I’m challenging you to do today: Let go of your insecurities and take hold of your true identity. Will you join me? If so, leave a comment and say, “I’m taking hold of God’s truth!”

Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me to be Your child. Today, I choose to believe I am who You say that I am —Your holy, dearly loved child … equipped by You, empowered by the Holy Spirit and enveloped in Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

TRUTH FOR TODAY:
1 Corinthians 6:11b,But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” (NIV)

2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (NIV)

REFLECT AND RESPOND:
Have you noticed it’s easier to believe what God says about Himself than what He says about you? Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12b, NIV). We read those words and shout, “Amen! Hallelujah!” But He also said, “YOU are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14a, NIV, emphasis added). Hmmm. Not a lot of shouting going on with that one. So which is it? Both! Decide today to believe what Jesus said is true about you!

Write these truths and the corresponding verse on an index card, and make them yours today.

  • I am the salt of the earth. (Matthew 5:13)
  • I am the light of the world. (Matthew 5:14)
  • I am completely forgiven. (Ephesians 1:7)

I am taking hold of God’s Truth

      • I am taking hold of God’s truth! I struggle everyday with insecurities and feelings of inadequacy. I feel so insignificant and sometimes all alone even in a room full of people. I’m a quiet person and hard for me to start up conversations sometimes. And I feel a lot that that most people don’t care if I’m around or not. It helps me to hear others testimony of how the enemy works on their minds and they have overcome through God’s word and trusting him. Thank you for this article.

  11. I struggle with this in my life. Period. I gave myself to Jesus in 1979. I am a child of God but I struggle to believe I am worthy enough to be a child of God, to be a wife for my husband, to be a mom for my 28 and 25 year old sons, to be a friend. I really stuggles.

    • Anne, look at the flaws in the people in the Bible: Abraham was a liar, Sarah set up her husband with her maid and then blamed the maid, Jacob was a deceiver, David was a murderer, Peter blurted silly ideas without thinking, John Mark walked away from ministry, Paul tried to kill off Christianity. None of us deserve the love Christ pours out on us—that is why it is called grace.

Lord, sweep the doubts out of Anne’s heart. Give her the strength to send the enemy and his lies packing. Grant her grace to kneel at your feet and declare, :Worthy is my Lord! And I am his beloved daughter!” Amen.

    • Anne I so understand what you’re saying! I struggle with this every day of my life! It started in my childhood…And hasn’t stopped! One battle after another! I don’t want to be a hostage!!!😨😢😤

    • I used to feel the same way ,even after I asked God for forgiveness. Then one day things started changing, everything I had lost started day by day year by year God restored things I never knew possible. But it was only when I started talking to him and asking him to guide me.I trust God and he really listens.

thank you for sharing today’s word. You really touched my heart when I read the part that says “who are you going to believe “. This is because yesterday my husband told me that I will not win the American Green Card diversity visa lottery whose results will be released next week on 2nd May 2017. In response to his discouraging words simply looked at him & said “you’re not my God and you will never be”. I later prayed to God & told God that my life is in his hands & as my God he will help me for I’am trusting in him to bless me next week, please pray for my selection as a winning entrant. Amen

I’m taking hold of God’s truth. I am fearfully and wonderfully made. This is so timely – thank you!!! ❤️ The battle is almost tiring between believing God’s truth & tuning out satan’s lies. In the moments I realize the work God is doing in me, satan is quick to try to convince me otherwise telling me thoughts like you mentioned in addition to thinks like, you’ll never change, you can’t. In one way he is right – I can’t, God can.
Philippians 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

  40. Wow!!! This is most definitely a word for me. I am a single mom of 2 sons. One with special needs. I’ve been married and divorced twice. I have looked for and found “love” and acceptance in too many wrong places. My self worth has been depleated, or so I feel. I am a Christian and know HIS promises are always yes and amen. Please pray for me as I grow and have God given courage to speak and say no to people who drain the life from me. I AM loved by the Lord and I do have self worth. Thank you for you devotion today.

    • I understand your looking for fullfillment or worth in the wrong places. Just like the woman at the well you end of left and continuing to try to fill God’s place in your life. I pray you find the living water in the Lord and it’s springs up a fountain of contentment and joy!

    • You are certainly loved!

I’m taking hold of God’s truth. This devotion tells just hw I have been in the last six or so years. I wondered if God still cared about me because my marriage was falling apart. I had not given it to God to take care of. I was trying to do it myself and my way. When I gave it to God; he took over and everything has worked out for us in his time not mine. On May 17, 2017, we will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. God is so good if we give him the situation to take care of and understand that it will be done in his time not ours.

You’re message spoke to my weary soul this morning. I accepted the Lord as my savior about 5 years ago, but I still tend struggle with past hurts and regrets that creep into my mind saying I’m not good enough. I pray the Lord gives me the strength to resist the Devils whispers of inadequacy and to stand firm in who I am and who He’s called me to be.

  75. Sharon F says:

This message blessed me at the right time. I have been awake for 3 hours with insomnia, about to celebrate a special day, and reflecting on some of my own insecurities. I needed this reminder as one of God’s children to believe all that He said about me, and who He is in my life. Thank you for this blessed word.

  77. Terry Moore says:

I am who God says I am and I am taking hold of God’s truth!

  78. Thank you for sharing. I’ve struggled lately with the fact that as a child of God, that I could actually enter into His presence. Maybe with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, but nothing could truly allow me total access to God the Father. Maybe from afar, but never up close. He has been working with me on this so much that I made one of my passwords (Abbagirl) to remind myself each time that I type it, that He is closer and more real to me than my earthly daddy was. And I was a daddy’s girl. Your words and His words today have really helped. Thank you!!!!

  79. I am taking hold of God’s truth & His power to allow me to become the person He desires for me to be.

  80. Christina says:

I’M TAKING HOLD OF GOD’S TRUTH!!! Hallelujah!

  81. I am taking hold of God’s truth. He meets me where I am and I need to reflect on the word of God to know who He has me to be.

  82. I am taking hold of God’s truth! May I reflect that truth and His love this day to all I come in contact with.

  83. I am taking hold of God’s truth, in Jesus’s name-Amen! I I needed this today as I’m always thinking about mistakes I made with my kids and parenting as they grow up “if I would’ve done xyz, maybe they would behave differently etc. etc.”.

    • Judy; I feel exactly how you do regarding my 3 grown children. One is divorced, one quit college (but has returned – yes! But going at a slow rate), and the other child is very successful, married, has a child, attends church). The older 2 don’t go to church, but I do feel they are believers. We raised them in a Christian household. Sometimes I wonder if we were too strict with the older two.

  84. I’m taking hold of God’s truth! I’m embracing who he says I am in Him, even if I don’t feel it. I am choosing to trust Him!

  85. Cindy Herman says:

I am trying so hard to believe this. My head knows this but my heart doesn’t. I am in the middle of a sudden and horrendous divorce not of my choosing. Please pray.

I take a hold of God’s truth and believe those verses for me!

  95. I’m (trying) to take hold of God’s truth! I’m coming out of a six year relationship of being told I’m not good enough, not thin enough, not pretty enough, my flaws being pointed out to me daily, my body being compared to every other woman we encountered…the waitress, the store clerk, the other grocery shoppers….I have struggled to finally break free and I have finally broken free of this relationship, but its effects haunt me and I am struggling to overcome my own now constant critical review of my appearance, the struggle continues, but God is helping me heal. The farther I get (time and distance) the more I think I’ll be able to heal. Please pray for me as I continue to work on healing and becoming the happy, significantly more secure girl I used to be. Blessings, Jill

    • Jill, prayers are lifted for you! YOU are the daughter of God! Clothed in His beauty and love! YOU are beautiful to the one that matters! Believe in your worth and the love your Father in Heaven has for you! He is with you and will never forsake you!

    • I”m taking hold of God’s truth! Jill, there are so many amazing stories of hurt and healing by women touched by this devotional today; but yours really tugged on my heart and I felt the need to write to you. Our stories are one in the same except it took me 25 years to “break free” and I am still healing. I try to remember the verse. Psalm 139:14 “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well.” NIV God doesn’t make mistakes, He made you uniquely you. I pray that you will remember that.

    • I want to hop through the screen and give you a big southern bear hug. You are so precious. Don’t let those lies tell you anything different. Reject the lie. Replace it with truth.

  98. “I’m taking hold of God’s truth!”

  99. Thank you! I needed this! Today I am taking hold of God’s truth for my life!

  100. I have been struggling with this for so long, I can’t remember NOT struggling with this. Every time someone gives me a compliment, I worry they might find out one day that it isn’t true, and get angry at me for not telling them. I worry that while I’m pretending that I am a good person, the other people around me know that I’m not, and are laughing at my show. Daily, I struggle with this. I needed to hear these words so, so much… Thank you. Thank you for reminding me that, in spite of my doubts, I am (this last word took a while to type…) holy.

  183. How do I do that? I fail at everything that I do and attacked from all sides. My depression and anxiety have been part of me all my life. I’m not meant to be happy or even content in this world. All I have is fear and pain and stress. I can’t even concentrate long enough to read one verse and even remember anything about it. I have no earthly spiritual support. I don’t know how to pray since no answers either way have come so I may be doing it wrong. I believe in Jesus but obviously don’t know how to do being a Christian. This site keeps pushing these books..if you’re this or feel this then you need this book. Even I know that’s not the answer. I don’t have the money to waste especially with them only being available in the US. The devotionals can be helpful (at least they’re free), but I usually just end up feeling worse because I know I can get nowhere near the author’s experiences. I’ve never had a personal encounter with God. It’s getting harder to believe when you see no evidence. I can’t talk to anyone anymore.

    • I will pray for you I understand
      Read God’s Word everyday
      Pray to the Lord everyday
      Worship in song etc
      Wait upon the Lord
      Walk in faith
      Believe
Homework: Love God with all your heart and love others
      Don’t give up

    • Yes, most books are fallible, but the Bible is not! I’m not an expert but start with Psalms…David frequently felt the way you do but found closeness to God when he prayed. I am praying that will happen for you!!

    • Laura,
Your post caught my attention this morning. I certainly can’t claim to have all the answers, but I can tell you a few things that have helped me over the years. Have you tried putting verses up around your house or tucked in places that you’ll see them? Instead of feeling frustrated with yourself for not remembering them when you come across them (I too have a poor memory for these things!) surround your living space with verses that speak truth about who you are in Christ. Read them aloud when you come across them or rephrase them to make them personal – “I AM a child of God.” “For God so loved ME.”

And pray. It’s one of the greatest lies we believe as Christians, that we need to pray a certain way or else God won’t hear or listen to us. God is our Heavenly Father and loves to hear His children’s voices. Tell Him everything. Express your stresses, your fears, your desires – everything! He already knows everything about you – there’s no need to “impress” Him with fancy words and He’s not sitting up there waiting for you to misspeak so He can laugh and not answer. He loves you and just wants you to talk to Him.

Also, side note, but yes, you are spot on when you say that books will not solve your problem. They have their place and can be helpful, but they will not get to the root of everything. Only Christ can do that. Don’t be discouraged that you can’t read them and keep doing the devotionals! They are a great source of encouragement without breaking the bank.

Finally (and sorry if this is a bit long-winded!) but you say that you haven’t had a big spiritual experience like the authors have. That is absolutely okay. Everyone’s story looks different and we’re all in for a lot of heartache if we start comparing our story to everyone else’s. That being said, think about the time you’ve been a Christian. Is there any moment, no matter how small, that stirred your heart and made you know God was real? Cling to that. Remember that feeling, write it down and keep it with you. That’s often my source of encouragement on days when I feel like God isn’t there. And if you can’t think of a moment? That is also okay. Pray that God give you one. Believe that He will, even if that belief is small. And look for it!

DON’T GIVE UP. The devil is always whispering that we’re not enough, that God isn’t real or that He’s not listening, and that our lives will always be miserable. Tell him that he has no power over you and continue to pray and search Scripture for truth. It’s not an easy road, especially with anxiety and depression to battle, but God will NEVER leave you. He is with you when you can feel it and when you can’t. Keep posting on here if you have questions or need support – the ladies here are awesome. Pray when you want to and even when you don’t. Don’t give up!

If you need to talk to someone directly, PLEASE don’t hesitate to email me (ivesamye@gmail.com). I would be happy to talk to you anytime. Praying for you today, Laura!

    • Laura… You believe in Jesus! That is not a failure to me, but the best thing you could do! My encouragement to you would be to talk to Him. Just talk to Him about anything and that WILL be your prayer. There is no right or wrong way to pray, just your way. I will pray for you for peace and I know that others that read your post will too.

  227. Maribel hernandez says:

You totally read through me, this is very tiring. Everything you said I’ve done, it consumes my spirit. Believe me, I try, I speak the Word, but deep in my inner self I say things like, “who are you Maribel.” Praying this prayer over me.

Thank you for being real and sharing, God bless you

  238. I have struggled with this for so many years – and continue to, sad to say. I’m exhausted by it truthfully – please pray for me.

  239. Thank you for sharing this, I have been struggling with insecurities my whole life, I felt like you were talking directly to me! Thank you God for opening my eyes to the truth and help me believe it in my heart and fight the lies the enemy throws at me by remembering to put on the armor of God every morning! Amen

  240. Thank you so much for your words. I can not believe I am actually reading my thoughts this morning. I have struggled after going thru life with a mother who never showed me love or kind words but did to my other two sisters. I never knew what was wrong with me. I never got in trouble or pregnant in school like my siblings I just always towed the lines. I even at 18 was so broken I attempted to end my life and by Gods grace my ex boyfriend just so happened to stop by and still came into the house even though no one answered and found me. My mothers words to me at the hospital that day was “I can’t wait till your dad sees that you are not perfect” and she walked out of the room leaving me and the nurse alone in the room.
I battled a Anorexia and bulemia from 18 thru all four of my kids pregnancies and reached an all time low when my oldest was in 5th grade and weighed in at 89lbs. My husband has been my rock my strength and without him and his unfailing love I probably wouldn’t have made it. It has been 14 years and my health is good but my spirit still isn’t. I read his word and pray to him but still deep inside I feel so insecure. I will not give up. I have forgiven my mother but my insecurities are still there. I am a photographer and now moving into only doing prints to sell but my whole theme behind them will be “God’s Hands at work” because I feel if I can throw myself into seeing His beauty I may be able to find my own within.
Thank you for listening and again than you for today. I will definitely take these words into heart even though when I read them thru I didn’t feel it was true to me but I won’t give up hope!

  241. I’m taking hold of Gods truth ❤️

  242. Your words are timely. I’ve been struggling with not feeling loved by God as a child. I’ve been praying, begging for God to hear in the area of deferred hopes. For years. Asking God to give at least a small ray of Hope and was rejected yet again last night. I came to terms with the fact that yes God sees me as a child but not a favored one whom He loves to bless or shower affection on. I’ve felt this in my heart yet “the heart is deceitful above all.” So…I will choose today to stand on what God’s Word says is true. And I will choose to take hold of this truth today even if my heart is not quite there yet. I want faith to move mountains!

  243. I struggle so much with insecurity and jealousy. I have pushed my spouse away because I can’t get over him and the other woman. I try but I always seem to lose to satan with his lies that I’m losing to the other woman. I can’t seem to remain strong and confident in who I am and trusting that the Lord will fix this. I fear that he will not.

  244. I am taking hold of God’s truth!

  245. Thank you for the inspiration and giving me the courage… I’m taking hold of God’s truth!

  246. Anne Daniel says:

I know the Lord paid the price for my sins and forgave me however after decades I cannot forgive myself. I know what the Word says and so I walk in faith all along the regret, disgust and tremendous sorrow of the past.
I am immensely grateful for God’s forgiveness but who I was haunts me.
    Thank you for your devotion.
    Anne

  247. I’m taking hold of God’s truth! You are who you say I am! Courageous and dearly loved!

  248. What powerful words of testimony!!! I needed to read this today. So many Christians are walking around like this. Even more Christian teenagers are walking around not believing that they are the sons and daughters of God. Thank you for this.

I’m believing what is written in Gods word. I am loved, I am Gods chosen.

I’m taking hold of God’s truth, for me, for my marriage, for my kids!

  253. Having finished my Master degree 6 years ago, I have not been able to find a job where I can use my degree. Each resume that I send and rejection letter is like a stab to my heart and self esteem. I have tried to hold on to the fact that Godbis not ready for me to move into a new position, but most times I listen to what the devil says to me. I’m not good enough and will never be good enough. I become jealous of those who get my “dream job”. Today I will write these verses out and put them on my desk and on my mirror. I commit to taking back my joy. I vow to hold on to God’s truths and trust in His plan for my life.

I believe in who God says I am, and will walk out these truths everyday! I need to extinguish the old mindset where only the negative words and things of my past play on “repeat” daily. I see this same mindset rising in my teenage daughter and I am constantly sharing who the Word of God say says she is….I pray I am a living example so she can see the change in me! Thank you for being so transparent and sharing your heart, it lets me know I am not alone.

  257. Kristi Holmes says:

I struggle with this everyday and this was perfect. I will join you. I am taking hold of God’s Truth.

  258. Stephanie says:

I’m taking hold of God’s truth. Starting right now I will see me and love me as God does.

  259. Jerica Smith says:

I am choosing to believe what Christ says about me, today!

  260. Mikal Duncan says:

I regularly thank God for being all that He says He is. But I rarely thank Him for making me all that He says I am! Today, I am reminded that these 2 truths are inseparable and forever true. Keeping both truths in unison makes all the difference. Thank you for this encouraging reminder!

  261. I think somewhere along the way we got the message that we have to be perfect for God to accept us. Jesus is the only perfect being that walked this earth. He left us with the gift of the Holy Spirit to guide us and give us confidence. We are all flawed and the wonderful thing is He loves us regardless. We are His. No one loves us more. ❤️

  262. Vanessa Vasquez says:

I am taking hold of Gods truths!!!!!!!! Amen!

Something the Lord has been working in my heart recently is that all of my relationships should reflect my relationship with Him. The more I draw closer to the Lord’s heart, the deep and stronger my friendships grow. It is a moment by moment decision to find joy, comfort and fullness in Christ first, but it starts with having a heart that is open to accepting God’s truths in that moment.

  304. I’m taking hold of God’s truth!! Thank you so much for this comforting and reassuring word. This was right on time for me this morning; I have been paralyzed with fear and insecurity for a very long time and I am so ready to move in my true identity and who God has called me to be. I had a meltdown this morning driving in on the way to work while having my talk with the Lord like I always do. I cried out to him and really surrendered asking him to rescue me from this roller coaster ride of always feeling inadequate, defeated, alone, and imprisoned by my own wrong way of thinking. I always run to the word, it is my daily medicine and when I am down it picks me right up. I was immediately led to go to Proverbs 31 and read the daily devotion AND Wow was I shocked when I read the title! God hears and knows all, and will always send a powerful on time word to strengthen you when you feel at your lowest point (what confirmation this message was). I thank and praise God for my healing and my deliverance!! I’m standing on the promises of God!! Thanks again for this life-saving word…..

The time is now, we must go forth and utilize the wisdom gained through our pain and life lessons. I believe it’s all a gift from God to empower us to help others going through the very same thing! All glory belongs to HIM…BLESSINGS

    • Elizabeth Smith says:

Portia, Through your written words I heard you. I can feel your pain and desperation of your heart. I am keeping you in my prayers. Please know you are not alone and the voices we heard putting us down even our own and pressures put upon us by others are not what God intended for us. He loves us and he wants us to love each other. Though I do not know you, I love you my sister in Christ. God bless you and know you have a friend in Jesus.

      • Thank you so much Elizabeth! I needed these sweet, loving words of encouragement. I am in a really low place in my life but I will always continue to keep the faith and trust in God no matter what. For I know that this too shall pass. You stay encouraged my friend. 312. I choose God’s word about me!
I have lived with an eating disorder for 34 years now and I torment myself every day about how I look and subsequently how I refuse to believe that God loves someone so flawed as myself. But your words spoke directly to my heart….how can I say that as God’s creation I am not perfect. I’m exactly as He meant me to be, I need to grab a hold of that and walk the path He has given me, keeping my eye on Him and giving Him the praise and glory He deserves. Thank you for sharing with so many of us that struggle with the same thoughts and feelings.

  313. Marilyn S says:

what a great message, for women especially. That is one of the things that I struggled with the most after becoming a Christian. I know God says he loves me but a hurt hits and I struggle again . Satan adds fuel to the lie I hear and feelings get jumbled Feelings do not always match facts. Satan knows our heart and God knows our heart. The battle continues. Who am I going to listen to? I am given a choice. Again I run to God for help. The battle belongs to the Lord.

    • Not really knowing what to say, I want to share with you that I feel pain as I read your words! I am really glad that you seek heeling from the Lord in places like this! I’m 53and have been a Christian for a long, long time but have always thought of my self as unworthy to serve the Lord. I read this devotion daily but this one really spoke to me heart and I am going to choose God’s word and am not going to let the evil one to dictate my life by telling me that I’m not good enough anymore! I have a memory problem because of a traumatic brain injury back in 1995 and often don’t remember the thing I read and hear in a sermon. What an awesome, powerful message this morning!!
    Thank you!!

  370. I feel like you were writing that post about me, except I haven’t grown to see the truths God says about me. I am exactly as you described “I knew the verses were the infallible Word of God, but I felt rather squeamish hearing them, reading them and believing them.” I find it extremely hard to get those thoughts to penetrate to the depths of my heart so that they can be like a salve on the wounds of my heart and heal me. Do you have that list of truths you could share?

  371. At age 63 and a grandmother one would think I had this issue settled but after this weekend when my older brother told me I was a terrible person and my mother told me to be more like my brother and that I do more for my dog than my own children I was shaken to my core. They are mad at my husband and me for selling our house and moving an hour and a half away to be a little, closer to our grandchildren but still close enough for my twice weekly visits to mom. My brothers mad because he has never had to help mom in any way until the last 3 months and moms mad because she likes me to available 24/7 for whatever her whims might be. That sounds harsh but it is oh so true as my husband, children and close friends told me this weekend as I cried and cried. So it’s obvious this message today has great meaning for me. I am not the lies the enemy spoke thru my mom and brother. I am the salt of the earth. (Matthew 5:13)
I am the light of the world. (Matthew 5:14)
I am completely forgiven. (Ephesians 1:7)
    I choose truth today.

Yes! I believe I am who GOD says I am. It’s not in the Bible in these exact words, but I believe that I am a Princess Warrior and GOD is training me for His Army!

  389. Oh wow this is exactly what I needed. I have been struggling with insecurities for a very long time. While growing up my dad teased me about being fat. He would make jokes in front of the family about me. For example, when we were on an elevator he read how much weight could be on there and told me I needed to get off because I was over the limit. That was so heartbreaking and has caused so many problems in my life. From a very young age I thought, “If my dad thinks I am fat and not good enough then why would anyone love me.” I slept with numerous guys, always felt jealous of other women and I didn’t feel good enough. I dated and married the wrong men. I am now 42 years old and have had enough of living my life with these insecurities. I forgive my dad and know that he didn’t realize what damage he was doing. He was teased by his parents growing up. Now I don’t know how to get over the way I think. I am single with two kids. I want a healthy relationship but I feel like I always ruin them with my insecurities. This message today is exactly what I needed. I am going to repeat this over and over until God heals me – Finally I prayed, Dear God, I’m going to believe who You say I am. I don’t feel it. I can barely think it. But I’m going to believe Your Word is true for me and about me.

  390. By Gods grace I became the blessed and loved child of His. He opened His arms and I opened my heart ❤️ I have never looked back and I am so excited to continue this walk with Him for the remainder of my life here on earth 🌏 so blessed and so loved.

Thank you so much for today’s devotional, I’m not alone in feeling this way. Praise the Lord from whom all blessings flow.

  407. wow – it really touched me. I am where I don’t think I am worth anything. was married to a man that could not love me and made me feel unwanted and unloved. reading your scripture touched my heart. is hard to believe something when for the past years all you have heard was different. Fighting the enemy is not easy job. he is loud and if you are going thru something, is easier to heard him Instead of who we really should listen to our God who created and loves us. Thank you for sharing it.

  408. Jennifer Johnson says:

You have no idea how much I needed to hear this today. It’s difficult sometimes to truly believe that God loves me despite myself. Today I am more encouraged than ever to keep on believing. Thank you so much!

I am taking hold of God’s truth! This is right on time for me thank you for sharing this and being obedient to our Father!
Just this past week I have truly been speaking this into my spirit, especially when the old will sneak up in me and even out of me sometimes. I am chosen! I am forgiven! Even if it was only me He still would have sent His son Jesus Christ! I am at such a beautiful cross roads in my walk and I’m so happy about it, even if it is in my later forties…better now than never amen!and I’m forever great full!

  419. Chasity Larson says:

I am taking hold of God’s truth. I struggled with this about 8 years ago, but God got a hold of me at a Women’s conference and showed me I am worthy to be called a child of His.

  420. Melissa zapata says:

I’m taking hold, of GODS Truth about me!

  421. Stephanie Hiles says:

I’m taking hold of God’s truth!! This has been an ONGOING struggle for me, starting in my teenage years for sure, and continuing to this day… I need to saturate my mind with God’s word — His truth!! What you wrote in this devotional is SPOT ON… It’s like you’ve reached in and read my mind & my heart. THANK YOU!!

  422. Kathy Lindemann-Hijar says:

I choose to believe what Gods says about me!!

  423. Sharlene walushka says:

I’m taking hold of God’s truth about me

  424. Such a simple, straight forward concept, and yet I don’t feel like I deserve it. I guess that’s the point, I don’t, but I’ve been given great gifts, and great love. I chose to accept it today, like I never have before. I chose to abide in His love, His salvation. Thank you Sharon.

    • You are so right! None of us deserves such an Awesome loving God like we have access to and He loves us more than we could ever deserve or repay. Our Good deeds are as filthy rags but He, God in His great love for us, sent His one and only Son to die for our sins. We do not deserve and CanNOT repay…..!!! Like you said we only need to ACCEPT the precious gifts He wants to give us!! Saying this for me as well as anyone else who might benefit from it!

  425. Andrea Arany-kovacs says:

This isn’t one of my deepest hurts. I will choose to believe today that I am who He says I am.

    Thank you.

  426. Oh, how I needed this today. God has been working with me on this very thing recently. This is confirmation that today is the day. God really does love me, I matter to Him. I want to live in the love and value He has already given me. What a sweet birthday message He has given me today. Thank you for sharing!!

  427. I’m taking hold of God’s truth about me! I’m currently studying the “Armor of God” and realizing how often I listen to Satan’s lies that make me feel less-than… Thank you for this reminder!

  428. Pam Arnold says:

    I’m taking hold of God’s truth ! I am loved ! I am who he says I am !

  429. I do believe this to be true. Where I struggle is that I feel “arrogant” in embracing this. We are supposed to be humble. I want to step out in confidence, but feel this isn’t being “humble”. Perhaps these are just other words for my struggles with that confidence.

  430. I’m taking hold of Gods truth about me

  431. Judith Minchew says:

Fortunately, I had parents who instilled a good dose of self-confidence in me–I was taught, not so much by words, but by attitudes, that I was able to do whatever I chose to do. Their belief in me made me believe in myself. When I began walking with the Lord–late, at age 39!–that was so enforced by the truth of God’s love for me, that I just forged forward, believing I was special and that whatever He called me to do, I could do! I am so blessed to have this inside me–the Holy Spirit, strengthening and enabling me all my life walking with Him. (I am 72!)

  432. VIckie Miles says:

why is it we remember and believe all the negative words from our past but not the positive ones….I remember liking a boy as a teenager but he told his friends he didn’t date “its.” This has been a constant memory since that day when I over heard him say it….talk about giving you an inferiority complex. Since then I have felt I never have measured up…not quite good enough. Then I took the healing journey and it has really helped in the way I look at others and myself. I am a princess, a child of the king. I still have days where I remember those hurtful words ( and many others) but God is whispering his love to me day by day in a lot of little ways ( and BIG ways) and now the hurtful words are replaced with his loving words.

  433. I’m taking ahold of God’s Truth!
Thank you for this devotional, Sharon!
    In peace,
    Kari Lynn Auld🌸

  434. Jennifer Palacios says:

Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me to be Your child. Today, I choose to believe I am who You say that I am —Your holy, dearly loved child … equipped by You, empowered by the Holy Spirit and enveloped in Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

I will believe! I am taking hold of God’s truth! I believe that I am the light! I believe I am worthy…I have to be because He said I am! And I will no longer believe the lies of my enemy!! Thank you for this!!

  435. Kathy Huitink says:

Oh, I needed to read this-hear this. I lost my husband 2 1/2 years ago to a rare cancer (Cholangiocarcinoma) in just 8 weeks. Now I have been diagnosed with ALS. My heart hurts for our four sons and families. I am feeling not worthy- distant from God. However, you have reminded me that we have a forgiving, good God. I must focus on this. I will chose to believe who He says I am.

  436. Charisse Morgan says:

I am far from a Saint, and I know I am not perfect. However, I am a good person who is always thinking of others (often at times when I place myself on the back burner), but I Love God. I know God loves me, and he shows me that daily. My journey is not easy, but it’s mine. As a divorced mother of four I do the best I can each and everyday by the Grace of God. Thank You God for having my back when I don’t feel like I can make it.

    • Nicole Young says:

Good bless you, dear sister. A painful last couple of years almost landed me in your same position. Still working on putting my marriage back together, and I owe God all of the glory. I pray you keep sensing Him during those difficult times, when you feel you can’t make it. Hope you can hold onto His truths to get you through!!

      • Charisse says:

Good Morning & Thank You Nicole! Today is not an easy day. I simply want to run away. Thank You for your kind words and prayers. I feel so alone

  437. I choose to believe by faith that I am worthy!

  438. Nicole Young says:

“I’m taking hold of God’s truth!” Amen!!

  439. Beverly Cinnamon says:

Wow, I am always doubting myself, wondering why I can’t seem to “feel” it like others do. Spending a childhood and adulthood hearing my mother tell me I wasn’t good enough, smart enough, worthy has left me with a battle I still fight to this day for my self-worth. Thank you for this today! My husband was just saying last night how glad he was to see me finding my way out of those thoughts pounded in my head. That I am better than that and I one of the best people he knows! Amazing isn’t it? I still battle those worthy thoughts, but it sure is inspirational to read things like this and know it’s just not me and we all can overcome! God says we are worth it!

  440. Today- I am take hold of God’s truth 🙂

  441. I always show up to church with this preconceived notion that I’m less than the other ladies in the room. I duck in right before everything starts and leave as soon as it’s over. I feel like I’m a Christian by the skin of my teeth and I should just be grateful for that and not expect to actually fit in with the ” perfect Christians” that I’m lucky to go to church with. Satan is always reminding me of the life that I used to live and how those decisions have shaped who I am today. He fills my head with feelings of shame as I contemplate what it would be like to explain to these “perfect women” that I’m tattooed, divorced (twice), currently single, send my kids to public school, receive food stamps, drive a car that has no working gauges, rent my home, owe taxes, and the list goes on an on. The biggest one he gets me with is that deep down inside I want more. I want a Godly husband…that will really love me and stick around. I want to make enough money to pay to raise my babies on my own. I want my kids to go to college and make everything of their lives that I didn’t. I want them to fall in love with Christ before they make life choices that change everything. Satan laughs in my head and tells me that I can’t have any of those things, that it’s over for me, that I have some nerve to not be content with what I have and just glad that I didn’t get worse. He is a master manipulator that is clever enough to even use the Word against me, scriptures that tell us to be content and grateful, or ones that remind us that God will provide our daily needs not our grocery list of desires. And so he wins the war in my mind most of the time. I come away from these battles worn, sad, pathetically beaten and just about empty. I say just about empty because he can’t strip me of Jesus. He can’t take away what my Savior has done for me and what He has planned to do. I choose to rejoice in that!

    • Nicole Young says:

Praying that Satan’s voice in your head will be replaced with God’s voice of love, adoration, and affection. It’s clear that you know the truth, but I know exactly what you feel when it’s hard to take hold of that truth, and confidently soar in it. And I hope those “perfect” ladies aren’t making you feel less than. That’s certainly not the Christian way. You are every bit as lovely and worthy as Jesus in God’s eyes. May you feel the confidence to branch out and do life with your current church community. Or, may you possibly find another church home where you do feel a sense of belonging, if that’s how the Lord is leading. I just hope you stay encouraged on your journey!! God bless.

    • Amen Jennifer 🙂

    • Jennifer, the first response hit it dead on! The best way to get the enemy out of your mind and away from your family is to arm yourself with the weapons God equips us with (Ephesians 6). I know how you feel, and you are aware of God’s truth, TYJ! Stay prayerful and plugged into his word. His harvest and manifestation throughout your life will be your testimony. And tell it well! Pray for strength to change how you see yourself, then that will change the way you talk/act/think, and then you become a living example for your family. We can’t change anything about the past, but with God, we can have a better today and tomorrow. It’s not easy, but one day this will be your testimony to the lost. In Jesus name 🙌🏾!

    • And also, as far as the church, I don’t know your situation, but is that your ‘outside, too insecure to approach, or too overwhelmed with guilt’ opinion of the church women? I know that true women of God don’t behave that way. And so try to fellowship, if this is a false sense of perception, by joining a ministry. If you really like the church, find a different group/ministry to fellowship with before you decide to find another church. I don’t think people should let “people” turn them away from church; the enemy IS present there too! Especially if the pastor is awesome and his fruit is blessed. But let God guide you – be still until he makes his way obvious. God bless

  442. I’m taking hold of God’s truth! This was exactly what I’ve been needing to hear in my life…thank you

  443. So so needed this today! Thank you for what God laid on your heart. I am a mother of 3 young boys, one with Down Syndrome. I am currently visiting with family and right now I feel like the most inadequate, incapable mother who has no idea how to raise her children. I am certain it is lies from Satan. I will try to hold onto these truths God’s Word plainly lays out for me today as i renew my confidence in my motherhood calling and as I seek to honor God in my marriage and how I raise these little ones in the Lord. Thanks again

I’ve had some disappointments both personally and professionally and I am still trying to overcome feelings of doubt, insecurity, and thoughts of negative self-worth. This has been a difficult season of my life and as much as I believe God intends this all for my good and that there is a beautiful testimony on the other side, I have still been thinking that I am just not good enough and I am not capable of working hard enough to receive success and happiness. THANK YOU for this word today. I am taking hold of God’s truth. I am choosing to believe God. As I type this, I don’t feel it but I DO believe His word is true. I’am a child of the MOST HIGH GOD and HE says that I was created in HIS image and that I’am fearfully and wonderfully made. WOW !! Wonderfully made. That is special. While pregnant with my last child, right before age 35, I FINALLY believe I was worthy, beautiful, and loved for just me. 541. felice bellantoni says:

Thank you Sharon for this post.
I’m still battling many of the same demons I’ve had since I was 5; I’m now 66. I often ‘feel’ that my feelings and thoughts will never change and I should just throw up my hands and say, ‘well, guess i’ll be like this for the rest of my life.’
Like, it’s simply too late for me. I know, logically, this isn’t true but…… I’m just so tired of the demons that I seem to agree with… I need to come into agreement with what Jesus says about me and not listen to the old messages. And, I have been in that wonderful place often.. It doesn’t seem to last.
I would like to make a strong ‘decision’ to believe what Our Papa says about me and stick with that decision.
It kinda makes me think of people making New Year’s resolutions and they’re kaput shortly after.
Anyway, thank you so much for reading this loooong post:) With fondness,

  554. Bethanne Seel says:

Dear Sharon, I’m taking hold of God’s truths! I also don’t believe it fully yet myself… in fact, the closer I walk with Jesus, the more I see my sin. How could He possibly love someone so sinful? I think one of my fears of truly believing God’s truths is that I’ll be strutting around like some arrogant Christian. What does genuine, humble faith look like? That’s my goal.
    God bless you,
    Bethanne Seel

  559. Jessica Miller says:

I loved reading this because it sounds so similar to how God taught me who He says I am, after years of buying into the “less than” lie. I was also in my thirties and He also used another women, who happened to be teaching woman’s bible study, to remind me of who I really am through the power of His word. This was on the heels of me giving my life to Him after having an affair and allowing the beliefs I had about myself to lead to the near devastation of my marriage and family. Since that time, God has not only restored my marriage but gives me many opportunities in ministry to combat those very lies in other’s lives. I am grateful everyday for the transforming power He has to show us who we are and who we are called to be and show us His amazing grace and forgiveness.

  572. I am taking hold of God’s truth! Wow, your words have opened my eyes to the root of depression I haven’t been able to shake. Regret is just a symptom, loss of hope is too. I know my past is forgiven; I know my future is promised, for eternity. It’s in the present, where we live today, that the lies are treacherous and haunting: being unworthy, not good enough, undeserving, that the natural consequences of a less-than-perfectly-lived life are just and I have no right to expect better, in this life. Thank you, Sharon! I’m claiming these words and will use your tools to reclaim them daily. This is not a one time fix, but a mindset change that needs to take hold. Bless your ministry 🙂

    • Ginger I could not put it into words like that but you have perfectly described my feelings, fears and daily outlook. Thank you for giving me words to describe what I’m going through. God bless you and hold you in His loving arms.

  653. Katherine MacDowell says:

I struggle with very low self-esteem and feel like I can never measure up to who I am supposed to be and also who others need me to be. And I desperately needed to read this devotional today. My sister-in-law lives with us and she goes on cleaning binges, which leave me feeling horrible because I’m not cleaning with her. And she makes it very clear she’s mad about that. Part of it is simply that when she has one of these modes I’m usually sick as a dog with Lupus symptoms and partially bed ridden. I told her today that I would happily do the vacuuming maintenance, but she would have to leave to vacuum downstairs as I can’t carry it down from her room. So to make my embarrassment and my self esteem worse, she said the vacuum cleaner has been down here all along and I just haven’t seen it. And it wasn’t all that nice how she informed me of my failing as a person due to my illness. So suffice it to say this devotional was just what I needed to boost me up from feeling like a piece of dirt that hasn’t been vacuumed up so to speak. Ugh. So “I’m taking hold of God’s truth!” !!!!!!!! I refuse to feel like a piece of dirt. I accept that I am loved by Christ and while I hate my illness, God has given me a purpose and a reason for it that I am on a path of discovering and I am not less than anyone else.

I am feeling so hopeless today and reading your devotional gave me hope. I have always walked with a suspicion that people will eventually find out that I am a disaster full of insecurities, shame and sadness. I try to be hopeful and full of confidence but when those thoughts come to my mind, I am defeated by fear. I am wonderfully made in my fathers eyes, I should know that. even the ones that I am certain they love me , they hurt me so bad and bring out all the shame. I will Lord I will keep your words close to my heart and apply the true essence of love when I feel defeated. Thank you father God for always using someone to show me the way to guide me in your direction and that I am not alone.

  672. Angela Silva says:

I was sexually abused as a child and into adulthood by my father. I went from that house of my father to my husband’s house. He did not want to be abusive so he gave me so much freedom that I thought he hated me and I, in my insecurities yelled and abused him. Now, he is emotionally abusing me and we have a very dysfunctional marraige and home with 8 beautiful children that God has shared with us. This confuses me as well to think that God would allow these precious gifts from Him to be born into this mess of a home, but I know He has a plan and I want to believe Him for His wonderful, amazing, plan for our family!!! I know He loves us and His Grace and Mercy is big enough for us!! I serve and Awsome God!! I want to believe who He made me to be and How much He loves me and how He chose me to be a part of His Amazing plan!!

  673. I am taking hold of God’s hand with BOTH of my hands…Amen

  674. I grew up with a mother who was judgemental, critical and pointed out my every flaw and imperfection. I never felt loved unconditionally by her and I still don’t. She once told me ” just because she loved me doesn’t mean she liked me.” So many years of such hurtful words has left me broken and ashamed of myself. So hard to believe GOD could ever love me.

    • Elaine says:

I grew up with a mother who sounds a lot like yours, Marie. I have learned to accept God’s unconditional love through experiencing the love of a handful of Christian friends – one in particular. My Christian friends really DO love me in spite of my imperfections. They have them, too! If they love me completely, I know that a tender, loving God can, too – and DOES!!! And Christian counseling has helped me a lot to accept myself – and to see that God has actually “gifted” me with ways to serve Him. And YOU are special to God, too, Marie. He made you, so He knows you – imperfections and all! And He loves you. Will be praying that you discover your own way to accept God’s total love for you – and that you will heal and thrive.

No matter what happens or where my life takes me I will hold on to His unchanging hand. Everything I have gone through has brought me closer to Him but I am just so sad about my husband because he wanted to live. It just makes me cry and feel guilty and despair because he is gone and I am here. Pray for me.
