Through The Lens ~ MTC Action Plan Photo Hop Week 5

Happy Thursday, friends!

I can’t believe this time next week we’ll be back together for our new study! Moving right along! :)

If you haven’t signed up yet for Living So That by Wendy Blight, you can do that HERE.

And did you hear the exciting news about our first ever, face-to-face, IN PERSON Online Bible Study Retreat?! Words cannot describe the emotion I feel at the possibility of gathering with YOU in the mountains of North Carolina.  You can make your reservation HERE. (Remember, spaces are limited)

This is our last week of the MTC Action Plan. Keep in mind, however, that even though you may have set some measurable, reachable goals, ultimately we are not in pursuit of a stopping point but in preparation for a changed lifestyle.

Nicki has been reminding us this week that God is patient. That means He never gives up on us.

And no matter how many times you stumble (or go two weeks without exercising . . . ahem), don’t give up on yourself. Get back up. Again and again and again.

Don’t count yourself out.

Don’t disqualify yourself.

Keep going.

Hang in there.

Remain steadfast.

Be persistent.

Because this time is different, remember?

I’m so proud of you for the changes you’ve already made. And I know this really is just the beginning for all of us.

A wonderful, hope-filled beginning to a changed, healthy lifestyle and a heart filled with peace.

I leave you with this challenge from Lysa:

Make your next choice a courageous, persevering choice!

Now, tell us in the comment section, what has been one of your courageous choices during our study? What is your next courageous choice?

I’ll go first.

One courageous choice I have made during our study is to really, REALLY look at my eating habits – what I’m putting in my mouth and how much I’m eating – and make the changes necessary for my health and not just satisfy my taste buds. Every day it is a choice I have to make. It has not become natural yet for me to choose a nutrition-rich smoothie for breakfast over chocolate chip pancakes, but it is getting easier. The change for me (this time) is seeing God’s plan and desire for me to live healthy not only spiritually but physically, too. By doing so I can be more productive and effective with the tools He has placed in my hands to share Him with the world. It feels great to honor God with my body and my choices in this area, too.

Can’t wait to hear your answers and see your photos!

Peace, love, and OBS,

Shelly

Now, let’s get to hopping! :)

Every Thursday during this study will be a journey Through the Lens (meaning we’ll share photos instead of words). Share your favorite photo based on our theme for the week or create an original using your favorite photo editor. Host your photo somewhere on the web and then paste the link here just like we did for our Blog Hop. (See steps 1-4 in the picture below)

Choose one of the following photo themes:

  • Bridging the Gap ~“Perseverance bridges the gap between the trial and the blessing of becoming mature and complete, not lacking anything” (page 126). For fun, share a picture of your favorite bridge (from your home town or from some of your travels) as a reminder that we are becoming mature and complete.
  • Joy Marker ~ In Session Five, Lysa says, “We need to stake signposts of joy — joy markers – along our pathway of perseverance.” Share an image or create a word picture that serves as a Joy Marker for you.
  • God Is Love ~ God has a way of reminding us of His love in fun, creative ways if we will take time to see and listen. Look for a heart this week somewhere in your surroundings. Take a picture and share with us! (For example: a heart-shaped leaf, heart-shaped foam in your cappuccino or latte, heart-shaped cloud, etc)

Happy Thursday, amazing OBS sisters! I hope you’ve had a fantabulous week! :)

Our word for the week is worth repeating (plus I need to hear things again and again to let them sink in) so I’ll post it one more time for you:

MAXIMIZE

Have you considered its meaning?

  • to increase to the greatest possible amount or degree
  • to make the greatest or fullest use of (dictionary.com)

We can maximize our physical health and nutrition by paying attention to and increasing to the greatest possible amount those key nutrients found in the foods we eat. This keeps us protected against physical sickness and disease.

We can maximize our spiritual health by clinging to and making the fullest use of the Word of God and walking in the power made available to us through Jesus. This keeps us protected from spiritual sickness and disease.

Our verse of the week certainly testifies of this spiritual protection!

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:16).

In this week’s video, Melissa and Nicki remind us (again) that our power rests, not in our own efforts (although we do have to make an effort!) and strength, but in God and His Word. And Lysa Terkeurst reminds us (again) that this journey is not just about our food issues (although food is a huge part of this study).

That’s a lot of reminding . . . let’s take a moment to let it all sink in.

Got it?

Okay, great!

On the blog yesterday, Sarah mentioned she couldn’t believe the shocking realization (after reviewing the list of foods in our book) that she had been starving her body through malnutrition. She was “stuffed full, but starving and empty at the same time.”

I couldn’t help but wonder if we had a list to determine our spiritual nutrition what it might say?

Would it say we are spiritually malnourished?

Would it hint that we are stuffed full with activities and our own efforts (apart from God) to try to make everything perfect or look just right but starving and empty at the same time?

I’m thankful we don’t have all those numbers, nutrients, and percentages to worry about when considering our spiritual condition, aren’t you?

We only have to surrender our hearts to Jesus and make the choice each day (because it is a daily choice) to fill ourselves first with Him – the only One who truly satisfies.

We can find nourishment in His Word and His amazing presence.

Worship and the Word, girls! It does a soul good!

As we continue to move forward into the last week of our study and into this lifestyle change, let’s determine to stay healthy both physically and spiritually.

Remember (another reminder!), YOU ARE WORTH THE EFFORT IT TAKES TO DO THIS!

And now for the announcement you’ve been waiting for!

Drumroll please . . .

Hey sweet sisters! Here we are in the middle of our study. What perfect timing to arm ourselves with this week’s memory verse.

“You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north.” Deut. 2:3

You may be walking a familiar road here. Another Bible study. Another motivating message to inspire you toward change. More signs that God is in your midst and by your side. A fire by night and a cloud by day. Deliverance from Egypt and provision in the wilderness. God has done great things! But now, as you survey the land in front of you, the giants, the obstacles, seem too big. The greatness of the enemy, the overwhelming hold of your struggle, looms large and your heart is beginning to get discouraged.

If we take Nicki’s challenge from Tuesday and dig a little deeper into Deuteronomy, we know what the Israelites do at this point. Supplied with the truth that God will go before them and fight for them they choose not to believe. They choose not to enter in to the promised land God has set before them.

Maybe you, too, have wasted a lot of days in fear because the enemy looks too big.

Maybe in the past you have chosen not to believe because you reached a wall that seemed “great and fortified up to heaven.” (Deuteronomy 1:28)

There have been many times I made progress and then refused to go any further because it was just. too. hard. Because I gave up, failed, or didn’t reach my goal, I (like Nicki) have heard the voice of failure whisper in my ear a time or twenty. And it’s easy to be overwhelmed with feelings of guilt as we entertain those whispers of failure. It’s easy to give up and refuse to keep going.

Maybe, though, this is where our story changes.

Maybe this is where the road we’re traveling begins to look different.

It doesn’t matter what our struggle is or what has held us in bondage for all these days. We weren’t meant to park in this place.

We have to know and choose to believe God is greater.

Because He is.

Let’s grab hands today, friends, and turn north together. Will you do that with me?

We really have been circling this mountain for far too long.

One final thing, don’t forget about our contest today!! Everyone who links up a picture below will be entered to win a gift package (conference call series and book) for our next study, Living So That by Wendy Blight!! If you haven’t already signed up you can do that TODAY!

And if you’re not linking up a picture but you’re hanging out with us anyway, please say hello in the comment section and let us know how you’re doing or tell us what you are doing to GET MOVING!

Love y’all BIG (seriously!!),

Shelly

Through The Lens ~ MTC Action Plan Photo Hop ~ Week 2

Hello beautiful friends! It’s Shelly – back for our Week 2 Photo Hop! Last week was so much fun looking at all the pictures you shared. I can’t wait to see the #EatSmart photos today! :)

I’m actually on Spring Break with my family this week and I’ve noticed I’m more mindful of what I’m eating. I’ve also noticed I have had more success in making better choices. I attribute that success to several things, but three are at the top of my list:

  • By starting in the Word every morning and spending time in God’s presence first I get my thoughts and will lined up with His.
  • I’m releasing unrealistic expectations, (I won’t ever be perfect or make the best, healthiest choice 100 percent of the time) but I’m also letting go of the lie that this is too hard or I can never have lasting change.
  • YOU! I took you with me on vacation to hold me accountable! Really, I did. I knew I had to post a pic of a healthy, smart food choice this week so I thought about that every time I ate. I posted several pictures to Instagram and saved some others to my phone and will be sharing a collage in the link up today.

This journey we are on may seem silly to some people, but this desire and determination to glorify God with our bodies in far from silly. It is serious business. We are pursuing God and confronting hard things, determined to honor Him in this space of our life, too. Anytime we embark on a spiritual pursuit of God there will be a confrontation with our flesh. The struggle is real but God in us is greater.

Let’s move forward honoring Him with every choice we make, no matter how big or how small they seem. You are worth the effort it takes to do this – to make these changes, to live life to the fullest!

And let us always, always, remember this is about God first.

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV 1984)

Through The Lens ~ MTC Action Plan Photo Hop ~ Week 1

Hi ladies! Welcome to the Week 1 Photo Hop! And wow, what a week already!

When I first looked at our study, I thought I could very easily get overwhelmed (I bet you did, too), but when I took it day by day and focused on the suggested assignments (thanks, Melissa and Nicki!), it was not only doable, but also very easy to understand and follow. I’m a speed reader, so I normally rush through reading a book taking a few notes here and there or writing blog post with some thoughts on my favorite chapters. This Action Plan, however, is causing me to slow down, think more deeply, and connect thoughts, behaviors, habits, and root causes in a way that I probably never would have without it.

There is no doubt my journey will look different than yours, and yours different from the next person’s journey. In fact, if we could all compare our answers to the questions in our book (oh, wait . . . some of us are already doing that in the comment section), we would see a natural variance of reactions, responses, and feelings. Because we each have different past experiences, struggles, and personal circumstances that affect our daily interactions with the environment around us (including food), it is normal that we filter through the pages of this study with our own lens and perspective. My hope (and maybe it’s yours, too?) is that I can harness all my thoughts and reactions and coral them into the safety and truth of God’s Word where I can find healing and help and lots of grace. (I love that Lysa continually reminds us that this is a “grace place.”)

Part of my strategy in finding this “grace place” is focusing on scripture. Starting first with the Word of God positions our hearts to hear truth and equips us to take action based on that truth.

Today, we all get to share our favorite action verse (see description below). My action verse may not look like the typical call to #Action. In fact, it sometimes demands that I cease from action (activity, busyness), but it is the perfect starting place. It centers me on the truth that everything I need is found in God alone. It reminds me that He is in control and beckons me to surrender all.

Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. ~ Psalm 62:1

I’ll be joining all of you and linking my picture below so come see me! I can’t wait to see yours, too!

And remember, every Thursday during this study will be a journey Through the Lens (meaning we’ll share photos instead of words). Week 1 Photo Theme:

ACTION VERSE ~ Because this is a “spiritual adventure with physical benefits”, our starting place will always be the Word of God. What scripture is your favorite encouragement and motivation for taking action? Share a picture. (It can be as simple as taking a picture of the scripture in your Bible or creating a scripture pic in a photo editing software or website.)
