When You Can’t Get Past Your Past

Sign up for our next online Bible study, "Uninvited," by Lysa TerKeurst, beginning September 6. Comment on today's blog for a chance to win an "Uninvited" book! | Proverbs 31 Online Bible Studies | #UninvitedBook #P31OBS{Editor’s Note: Today’s P31 OBS blog could be a trigger for those who’ve experienced childhood trauma. We pray these words encourage you and give you real hope.}

I was 7 years old. I loved my family and my home. I don’t recall having any fears at the time. People used to say they loved my laugh.

Then one day, the laughter stopped.

Fear, shame, loneliness and unworthiness entered my world. And I didn’t tell anyone.

I was sexually abused by a trusted adult neighbor. Not once. Not twice. But on several occasions.

It wasn’t my fault — but I didn’t know that for years. I blamed myself. Once a confident child filled with joy, I was reduced to a scared, insecure nobody who assumed she wasn’t good enough for anything.

Looking back, one would think as I grew older that I could just move on, grow up and get over it. But that wasn’t the case.

So what do you do when you can’t get past your past?

That’s a good question isn’t it? I don’t think there’s a nice fool-proof plan for it, either. If there is and you have it, write a book, because it will be a best-seller!

I don’t have a plan for you if you are struggling with moving past your past, but I can offer you some hope.

God loves you. (John 3:16)

He has plans for your life. (Jeremiah 29:11)

You are worthy. (Luke 12:6-7)

You are beautiful. (Psalm 139:13-15)

He can use your life, all of it, for good. (Romans 8:28)

Believe me I know all of this to be true. My life hasn’t been one of those that others dream of having. There has been a lot of dirt in it. But one thing I’ve discovered to be true is that gold can be found in dirt. Yep. There is treasure in the dirt of your past. It might not feel good or seem like it, but it’s there … although sometimes we have to dig for it.

Today, you could say that I have indeed moved past my past. It’s the reason I’m in ministry. It’s the reason I love all people. And it’s the reason I’m so passionate about Bible study. The Bible is the only place I’ve found solid answers and truth I could count on to get me past my past and offer me real hope for my messed-up real life.

Brand New – Bible Study Class

"Brand New - Bible Study Class” by Melissa Taylor | Proverbs 31 Bible Study Class | #P31BibleStudyClass #IKnowHisNameHey OBSers!

I know we are right in the middle of our Becoming More OBS, but I wanted to share something that begins in just a few weeks that you just might be interested in.

Yesterday, we opened registration for our brand new I Know His Name: Discovering the Power in the Names of God Bible Study Class! I know you might be thinking, “Hold on, Melissa. What do you mean by Bible Study Class?” Great question because this is different from our regular OBS. Here’s the 411:

This FREE Bible Study Class will run March 7 through April 8. It will provide you the opportunity to get in-depth biblical teaching, where you’ll go from simply knowing about God to really knowing God. The author of I Know His Name, Wendy Blight, will teach us how His different Names reveal who He is.

We’ve heard from some of you who really want to go deeper in your Bible Study, but still want the flexibility to connect with God wherever, and whenever, you choose. So that’s why we created this optional Bible Study Class. Feel free to invite a friend who’s considered OBS, but wanted a more intense study!

In this class you’ll learn to:

  • Equip yourself with seven tools for praying more confidently and effectively in any situation
  • Unveil God’s character, name by name, so you can live with confidence that God sees, hears and knows you by name
  • Transform how you pray and interact with God as you meet Him in the pages of His Word

You're invited!!! Learn more and sign up for the Proverbs 31 Ministries, I Know His Name Bible Study Class here --> http://www.proverbs31.org/namesofgod | #P31BibleStudyClass #IKnowHisNameNow, this study is a bit different than a typical P31 OBS, so here’s some important information to help clear up any questions:

  2. There’s homework. Wendy is SO passionate about this teaching and wants you to get the most out of it. In order to grasp the Names of God and understand the material, you’ll be asked to put in work several days a week.
  3. Don’t you worry though, there are still giveaways! Register for the Bible Study Class and you’ll be entered to win one of two prize packs. See below. Prize one is a necklace and a Bible with a personalized prayer written by author Wendy Blight. Activating the Power of God

Melissa SherlinHey all, it’s Melissa Sherlin with you for Bible Study Skills Day! We’ve been using the acronym P.R.A.Y. to help us through our unglued moments.

As we look at the A (application) in our acronym, I have to ask: Who’s had the opportunity to put what we’ve been learning into practice?

I’ll be honest …  I’ve missed some opportunities, but I was relieved to read through the comments in week 1 and learn I’m not alone in my belief that application is one of the hardest parts of Bible study! (Thank you all for sharing your hearts!)

Though it’s hard, application is key to transformation! Applying biblical truths to our lives and circumstances activates the power of God in us to make changes we’re not able to accomplish on our own.

Let’s look at this week’s memory verse of Philippians 4:7

2015_OBS_UNG_Verse_week5_Square_Philippians

Oh, how I want to apply this to my life! How about you? But when I’m feeling unglued, the last thing I feel is peace. Here are five simple ways I use to help apply the truths found in Scripture …

1. Understand the Big Picture Reminding myself the entire Bible is about God helps me put things into perspective. God created us, we all sin, he loves us, he had a plan from the beginning to redeem and restore us back to a relationship with him.

Keeping our thoughts on who God is and trusting He has a plan will bring peace! (Isaiah 26:3)

2. Know the Meaning of the Verse Romans 15:4 tells us everything written in the past was written to teach us. Knowing the intent of the passage and how it fits into God’s plan helps us understand how to apply it to our lives. Reading a summary/overview can help us understand the who, what, why, where and how of what we’re studying. One can often be found in a Study Bible in the beginning of the book you’re reading, or online like this summary on Philippians.

3. Take Note Are there any instructions, promises, warnings, or encouragement in this passage? Does it reveal any attributes of God?

4. Make it PersonalIs God asking me to make a change in my life in response to what I’m reading or learning? How can I apply this truth to a specific situation in my life?

5. Take Action! James 1:22 tells us not to deceive ourselves and only listen to the word, but DO what it says.

Application is our response to God’s Word, friends!

Let’s Chat:

Observe How does viewing our memory verse in the context of God’s plan of redemption help you apply it?

Bible Read Philippians 4. What can we learn from Paul, who was able to have peace that transcends all understanding in the midst of his circumstances?

K.I.S.S. – Keep It Simple, Sister!

ChristaHey, y’all! Christa Hutchins here for Bible Study Skills Day! We are looking at the acronym P.R.A.Y.  to bring God’s Word into those difficult situations that threaten to become unglued moments.

This week, it’s all about R: Read/Reflect on Scripture for God’s perspective.

Lately, I’m like a bad day magnet. Seriously, I have bad days all.the.time.

Maybe it’s because I’m leading some challenging projects at work and often feel in over my head. Inadequate. Not enough. Or maybe because I’ve been in various forms of a walking boot, cast, crutches and a scooter for the better part of eight months recovering from a running injury. (Okay, I’ll admit, the scooter is kinda fun 🙂 but the rest of it stinks.)

If I can’t run, I might as well not exercise at all. If I can’t exercise, why bother eating healthy? If I can’t eat healthy … well, I bet you see where this train is headed. Disappointed in myself. Discouraged. That’s enough to make anybody cranky.

Why don’t I turn to God in those moments when emotions are raw?

Because I make everything so dog-gone complicated. My natural tendency is to wait for a time to pull out my giant concordance and look at six books of the Bible to find some deep theological truth. But by then, it’s way too late to keep me from responding in a way that hurts people close to me.

Don’t get me wrong … I’m all for concordances and deep theological truths.  But God is teaching me lately the power of simplicity.

What if we had a simple way to access Scripture in the middle of our messy, unglued moments to impact the way we respond?

What if we just Google it?

Enter  “Bible verses about a bad day” in Google and we get:

bad day

The first result includes this:

Psalm 50:15 – “And call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” (ESV)

On my worst days, God wants to deliver me from my runaway emotions and use my words to glorify Him.  That would really help a girl out on a bad day, don’t you think?

How about when we’re feeling inadequate?

inadequate

Or discouraged?

discouraged

In less than a minute, we can have all of God’s truth we need to redirect our thoughts.

The power of simplicity. Let’s embrace it in our lives and in our Bible study.
