Welcome to the Becoming More OBS

MelissaTaylorOBSHi to all of our new and returning friends in Proverbs 31 Online Bible Studies! I can’t believe 2016 is off to such a quick start and before you know it, we’ll launch our first Bible study of the new year, Becoming More Than a Good Bible Study Girl, by Lysa TerKeurst.

My name is Melissa Taylor and I’m the director of Online Bible Studies here at Proverbs 31 Ministries.

That title sounds so professional, but please don’t let it fool you. I’m a down-home girl who, a few years back, just wanted to do Bible study with a few friends online. What I discovered was that I wasn’t alone. There were a lot of women who also couldn’t fit attending a Bible study into their busy schedule, so they joined me. Here we are, 26 studies later!

Know anyone who might like to join you in Bible study? We have many ladies who sign up with friends, co-workers and family members from all over the world.

We’ve had sisters who lived in different states do Bible study together. They followed along with the study on our blog, then would meet via phone or Google Hangouts once a week to talk about it.

Co-workers who were school teachers had one afternoon a week for Bible study. They plan lessons every day for their students so they wanted a study where someone else did the planning.  They all signed up for OBS and met weekly after work to discuss what they were learning, process it together and pray for each other.

And then there’s Sarah Travis. She’s one of our OBS leaders. Her family lives in Scotland and she and her husband went over there for six months a few years ago. She didn’t have to miss any Bible study. She was able to do her study and still be a leader with us — even though she was across the ocean from Proverbs 31 Ministries.

If there’s someone in your life you’d like to see join you in Bible study, will you invite them today? Here’s a nice little graphic to send them, or post it on your social media to invite people to join!

It’s great if you have a friend or two join you, but you can also sign up and do this study all by yourself. Well, almost by yourself — you and our OBS community. Everyone is welcome here.

If you’re inviting someone to join, let us know!

In the comment section, tell us who you invited or where you posted it on social media. By leaving a comment with that information, you and a friend are entered to win two Becoming More Than a Good Bible Study Girl books and the Conference Call Series, featuring our First 5 App writers! One for you — and one for a friend!

Don’t delay! The study begins January 25, so start inviting! And stay tuned~ there will be more information about our Becoming More study posted over the next week.

Have a great day!

OBS Small Groups

Hey, Everyone! With only a little more than a week left before our study begins, we want to tell you about an exciting opportunity for you.

Our Online Bible Studies are awesome on their own, but if you would like a smaller setting to engage in Bible study, meet new friends and share your heart in a safe place, then our private small groups on Facebook might just be for you!

We currently have 119 small groups with approximately 20 members in each, led by a trained Proverbs 31 Small Group Leader. Our leaders are some of the most loving and caring people on the planet! They love God, love His Word and they would love to have you in their group!

Beth Anderson is our Small Group Coordinator. Check out her story about how friendships made in our small group ministry recently impacted her life.

My life was changed when I became involved in OBS small groups. I have made friends from all over the country and even the world. Tracy is an OBS friend of mine who I had never met in person until just last month. I needed to fly home because my father had a medical emergency. Tracy lived not too far away and offered to pick me up at the airport and deliver me right to the hospital to be with family. What a blessing the small groups have been in my life! Not only do we study and discuss our Bible study together — but we also do real life.

Community is the cornerstone of our small group ministry. We want to know you. We want you to know us. We want to experience Real Hope for Real Life together.

Space is limited, so don’t delay. We will fill groups on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you would like to join a small group for our study, Becoming More Than a Good Bible Study Girl by Lysa TerKeurst, click here to visit our Small Group Registration page!

And if you’re not joining a small group, that’s OK too! We will have Bible study and lots of community right here on the blog.

We’ll be back on Monday with more information on all you need to know before we begin our study! Have a great weekend, y’all!

So, I Made A Mistake Today

MelissaTaylorOBSY’all are absolutely amazing! Earlier today, an incomplete and unedited blog post went live and was emailed out to anyone signed up for our Becoming More OBS. Instead of asking where the rest of the post was or pointing out my mistakes, you read what was there and shared your thoughts about Bible study.

In case you missed it, here’s what was posted:

Just in the thoughts phase at this point…still working.

I used to think that “Bible Study” was a scary word … well ok it’s two words, but you know what I mean. I thought that I had to pray a certain eloquent way, dress a certain way, and be smart to go to Bible study. I know, crazy huh? I also thought that people who did Bible study were super smart, way more smart than me. And of course they had to be really spiritual right?

When I joined a Bible study group for the first time, I learned all that was far from the truth. These ladies were like me. I’m not super smart or spiritual

To my surprise I found that I could mix my social life and Bible study. It was actually useful and fun.

***Note: That was the end of the post as everyone saw it. Definitely an incomplete blog post.

I checked my messages this morning and the first one I saw is from someone letting me know that my unfinished blog post was live. My heart sank. Then I panicked. It was my mistake, my error in scheduling. And it was sent to thousands of people. You have learned quickly that I need lots of grace.

So, I made a mistake today. I’m far from perfect. Really far. I’ll go one step further and inform you that our entire OBS staff and team are far from perfect, too. We get it right, and we get it wrong. We succeed and we fail. We fall down and we get up. When you think about it, isn’t that what Becoming More Than a Good Bible Study Girl is all about?

God isn’t asking us to get it right all the time. He knows us and knows we’ll make mistakes. But thankfully, that doesn’t disqualify us from being in Bible study, ministry or life.

This Bible study is for EVERYONE. Even if:

  • you think Bible study is stuffy and boring.
  • you think you aren’t smart enough.
  • you are unsure what you believe.
  • you are nervous you’ll be judged and sized-up by “perfect” Christian women.
  • you are worried your past is a disappointment to God.
  • you feel insecure about Bible study, especially with an online community.

Would you like to do a Bible study that fits your schedule, where you can be yourself and where you will be encouraged and challenged?

Then this Bible study is for you.

Let’s do Becoming More Than a Good Bible Study Girl by Lysa TerKeurst together. Our team can’t wait to do this with you, and there’s still time to invite a friend or two to join us! Study begins next Monday, January 25!
