Putting the Fun in Your Bible Study – OBS Options!

“Listen, Love, Repeat” Study Leader, Kendra Schwarz | Proverbs 31 Online Bible Studies | #ListenLoveRepeat #P31OBSHi! I’m Kendra Schwarz, the creative content coordinator for Proverbs 31 Online Bible Studies. I’m all about fun. But when it comes to using the word “fun” with “Bible study,” I used to be a bit skeptical. Can Bible study be fun?

Well I’m about to show you YES, it sure can! Are you ready? It’s time to discover all of the fun options we have here at P31 OBS. And here’s the best part: Everything is optional (even reading the book, though we don’t advise skipping that part – haha).

Because all of these options are to help “sweeten” up your Bible study experience, below is a video that explains the options! Let’s just say it has to do with waffles, chocolate chips and whipped cream … click here to watch

Oh and fun fact! All of our videos are transcribed. Click here for instructions on how to turn on Closed Captioning..

Option #1: We are family (I got all my sisters with me!)
Here at P31 OBS, we are one, big, happy family. We join in community on our blog and on social media. We’d love for you to join us on all, or a few different, community-building platforms.

Option #2: Bible Study PDF’s
This is a NEW option in OBS, and we’re so happy you’re our first group of ladies to go through these with us! Every Tuesday and Thursday on the blog, you’ll receive a Bible study PDF to work through, based on a chapter of the Listen, Love, Repeat book. This does not replace the book, but it’s something we’ve made to accompany it, to help you dig deeper into God’s Word, if you choose.

Option #3: Teaching Series
This is the ONLY option that costs money (other than buying the trade book). The Listen, Love, Repeat Teaching Series is based on the letters written by Paul. We’ll learn how to encourage those God has entrusted to us. You’ll get more info about this option next week.

Option #4: Bible Study LIVE
We have a fast-paced and fun way to do Bible study! And do you want to know the best part? You can do it right on Facebook. Bible Study LIVE is an hour-long study session with your fellow OBSers. Sign me up! Below are the links to each event.

Option #5: Party like it’s 1999 (not really, but kind of!)
Check out the list, and click the links below to learn more and join the parties available during Listen, Love, Repeat. These parties are fun, informative and the perfect distraction from everyday life.

  • Facebook – Tuesday, April 11 at 8 p.m. ET

The “Why” Behind Our Next Study

“Listen, Love, Repeat” Study Leader, Nicki Koziarz | Proverbs 31 Online Bible Studies | #ListenLoveRepeat #P31OBS

Hi OBSers (old and new)! I’m Nicki Koziarz, and I’m here to tell you the “why” behind our next study, Listen, Love, Repeat! Hopefully after we’re through, you’ll join me (if you haven’t already signed up).

I remember the day Karen Ehman called to tell me about this concept she was working on for her next book. I was in my bedroom folding clothes, fighting back the tears as she was talking. I knew this message was exactly what our world was going to need.

And as soon as I hung up the phone with her I thought … I want THAT.

That ability to listen, love and repeat it daily, endlessly and with a whole heart.

We have such an opportunity right now. It seems like there’s a lot of darkness around.

But it’s in the darkest places where people who love God have the best opportunity … to shine the brightest!

The atmosphere can change in any room we walk into. We can be the hope others need so much. We can bring the movement of being the goodness of Jesus to our world!

So today, I want to take those three words: Listen, Love, Repeat … and share with you how they are encouraging me to do this:

We are so busy! We’ve convinced ourselves that to be busy is to be effective. So I love that this message is challenging me to stop and LISTEN to the world around me. Listen to what others are in need of, listen to what others love so I can love them well and listen to the prompts God is putting in my heart.

And as I’m listening well, I’m discovering what it really means to LOVE others well. Not the way I want to love them, but the way they need to be loved. There’s a difference. And most of the time the latter is a little more stretching, because it makes me stop thinking of MYSELF.

Do we ever get this thing totally right? Are we ever finished living a life of listening and loving? No! There’s always more room for God to stretch our arms a little wider. So, REPEAT. And REPEAT. And … repeat.

Keep It Shut, Week 6

Missy_Professional_HeadshotHowdy friends. It’s Missy Pettigrew here to kick off our final week of study with you, and I’ve got some exciting news to share. But, I’m hoping you’ll hang in here with me until the end of the post, to hear it.

Just curious … did anyone see 5 weeks zip by, because, HELLO! Here we are, in the last week of our study of Keep It Shut by Karen Ehman. It sure feels like these weeks have flown by! Or, maybe that’s just my bruised piggie toes trying to find some light at the end of this challenging journey.

Who’s with me on that one?!?

We have some great things in store for you this week. Let’s let Karen Ehman, Melissa Taylor and Nicki Koziarz tell you what in the video, below.

Keep It Shut Week 6 from Proverbs 31 Ministries on Vimeo.

If you can’t view the video, click here.

I think Melissa shows some real potential on that piano. Don’t you? If you missed that, you’re gonna want to go back and check that out!

One idea that Karen shares with us, in chapter 10, is what gratitude does for us. And friends, we truly do thank our God every time we remember you (Philippians 1:3). When we read through the comments, we are profoundly touched by the way you are trying to allow God to tap on your hearts and guide your words.

In fact, it’s clear from all of the godly chatter going on here on the #P31OBS blog, that so many of us have been scooching over to make room for the Holy Spirit. I love the thought of tens of thousands of people moving over to make room for more of God in their conversations. Isn’t that just a beautiful picture?

Let’s finish this week strong! Here’s our #P31OBS Lowdown:

Memory Verse

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” ~Proverbs 18:21a (ESV)

  • Monday – We are diving into these last two chapters, 10 and 11, as we wrap up our time together in the #KeepItShutBook. Start reading chapter 10, “Something To Talk About,” and let’s see how we can use those tongues to speak life!
  • Tuesday – Nicki will be here to share her thoughts on Chapter 10. Stop by! Your tummy will thank you.
  • Wednesday – Bible Study Skills day with the lovely Sarah Travis. (It’s okay, let’s just all admit that we love watching her videos so we can hear that accent!)
  • Thursday – Erin Peters will be here with her insights from chapter 11, and with Karen’s video clip. Such. Great. Stuff!
  • Friday – Melissa Taylor will be back to close out our study of Keep It Shut. (SAY WHAT?!?!?) Sorry, couldn’t resist …

Optional (but awesomely fun) Events:

Tonight – Join Melissa tonight, at 8 p.m. EST as she welcomes Time-Warp Wife, Darlene Schacht to the 5th call in our 6 part series. We’ll also uncover our final step to making our words matter. Our What Happens When Women Walk in Faith OBS begins April 13th!

Let’s Chat:

  • Karen Ehman walks us through ways to practice gratitude this week. I will never forget the handwritten note that one of my second graders handed me on the last day of school one year. She told me I was her “favoritest teacher EVER!” (I think I know where I got my “shouting” instincts …) This was a child who struggled all year with keeping up. But, she surely did. And that handwritten note was the most precious display of gratitude that I had received during my time as an elementary teacher.
  • So, tell me, what is your favorite gratitude story? It can be one where you were the gratitude giver or receiver. Let’s flood this comment section with ideas about gratitude.
  • Where are you going to place your memory verse this week, to help you remember the power your tongue holds? (Mine’s going on my bathroom mirror!)

When Soft Can Be Wicked Hard

Missy_Professional_HeadshotHowdy Sweet OBSers! It’s Missy Pettigrew here today. Yesterday’s teaching from Melissa Sherlin had me digging around in Hebrews. I so love that book of the Bible. So much instruction that I can apply right into my everyday life! How about you?

And, I’m learning tons this week, too, as we learn how to better deal with anger.

Let’s have a little chapter chat, because this one … oh wow! I’m fairly certain that Karen Ehman came into my home, spied on me for a day, and then went home and wrote Chapter 9. I am so hoping there’s a chorus of “me toos!” going on out there, because, whoa Nellie!

Up here in New England, we say something is “wicked hard” to let folks know something is really difficult. Friends, I don’t know about you, but it is wicked hard for me to pause before I pounce.

Harder still, is to die to my righteous indignation or hurt, and instead give no answer at all, until God provides the softness needed to respond.

I find this especially challenging with my children. You see, one of them has special needs. And, although we are usually in complete agreement with the school team about what our child needs to succeed, once in a while, we’re not. There have been times when someone on the team makes a comment that hurts. My parenting skills seem called into question. I get angry.

It’s in those moments that I do well to remember a wise saying my Gramps used to tell me: “You win more flies with honey than with vinegar.” Even better, I do well to remember a verse we see in this chapter. Proverbs 15:1 tells us, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Oh, Father God! How I need You to place your Holy Hand over this mouth of mine. Make my answer so soft that no more anger is stirred. I don’t want to let my anger get the best of me. And, I certainly don’t want it to be given as the worst to someone else.

Going through our #KeepItShutBook “Climate Change Exercise” on pg. 164, I made a startling discovery. As I focused in on the times I let my anger fly, and what those times have in common, a clear trigger emerged. For me inadequacy = angry.

In those moments where my abilities as a wife, mother, co-worker or friend are called into question, I am much less likely to pause and ponder a softer response. I default to defensive mode. And once those hurtful words are hurled, there’s no catching them in time to stop the harm done.

But that’s no way to live. How much more joy can be found in words soaked in kindness and grace? For everyone!

Karen Ehman writes that “Softness feels good.” It surely does. In those moments when I feel a slight to my soul, I want to get better at intentionally applying Proverbs 15:1.

So, I’m resolving to change my default pattern from hurtful to heartfelt. This healing hearts business is wicked hard work. But, oh, it’s so worth it, isn’t it?

Let’s Chat:

Alrighty now, I’ve told you what I’ve resolved to try to change. Your turn! What makes it most difficult for you to pause before you pounce?

If you tried the Climate Change exercise, share a trigger and a pattern you’ve resolved to change.
