Watching my dad plant his garden, Tate, my 5-year-old, asked why his tomato plant wasn’t producing tomatoes right away.
That would be great, wouldn’t it? If we could demand fruit production? It doesn’t work that way, but sadly, I’ve applied that same juvenile logic to my spiritual life.
You know the fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5: Love, joy, peace, patience, etc.? I’ve tried to will myself to produce this fruit. But like Tate wanting a tomato plant to produce on demand, it doesn’t work.
It’s called fruit of the Spirit for a reason. We are called to live a life free from striving like it depends on us, and instead live like it all depends on Him! Want patience? Don’t try harder; trust harder.
