Welcome to Round 8 of Fighting Words by Ellie Holcomb! Maybe this is your first round, or perhaps you have been here for all of them. Either way, I’m thrilled you are jumping in the ring with me today! 

Let’s look at our memory verse for this round:

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NASB)

I remember memorizing the words of this passage in my fourth-grade Sunday-school class! My teachers helped all of us find it in our Bibles, write it down, and then week after week recite it until we could all say it word for word. 

I’m grateful for having had that scripture tucked into my heart as a young girl, but even though I knew the words, I didn’t quite understand what it meant to trust or acknowledge God for much of anything until my life got a little messy as an adult. Thankfully, after I tried to figure things out on my own and failed, God gently reminded me of those verses. Step by step, the words of this passage became real in my life as I shifted from relying on myself to trusting in God.

I hope you are finding that memorizing Scripture is powerful in your life as well. As we tuck the words of a verse in our hearts and minds and then as we learn to lean on God, He helps us understand and apply His words in our everyday, ordinary lives.
