Welcome back, y'all!
I love that we'll check in with each other every Wednesday. Sure, we aren't far along in the study. But our lives are still crazy, right? Life doesn't stop when we do Bible study. Thank goodness God can help us no matter what's going on. Amen!
Now get this: Several weeks before I found out I'd be writing for this study, I randomly started a course on the books of Corinthians. This question came up: "Who are you relying on?" The best answer is God, of course. But if I'm honest with myself, do I really rely on Him — or myself?
Then I read Get Out of Your Head. Early on, author Jennie Allen encourages us to break free from toxic thoughts by capturing them. Here's one of the scriptures she mentions:
“We demolish arguments and every pretension
that sets itself up against the knowledge of God,
and we take captive every thought
to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5, NIV)
If you read that scripture in context, you discover that, to truly do this, we need God. God's help — not self-help — is what makes the difference.
Yes, we declare war on our toxic thoughts. Yes, we have to take practical steps. But from where or who do we draw the strength to do so?
Have you prayed for God to remove your toxic thoughts, or are you just following suggested steps from the book? Have you asked God to reveal what you're thinking, or are you relying on yourself to spot and fix issues? Are you reading God's Truth in the Bible for yourself, or are you relying on scriptures you hear others quote?
Don't worry, friend. These questions aren't posed just to you but to me, too. The world glorifies self. It says we only need ourselves to conquer toxic thoughts. It's just not so. To win this battle over our thoughts, we need God. He helps us do what we can do, but He also does what only He can do.
Let's choose to rely on Him today.
