Hey there! It’s time for our weekly recap!
This week’s theme: Walk in Obedience
Our memory verse: “We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands.” 1 John 2:3 (NIV)
This week, Wendy Blight brought us through 1 John 2 to help us learn:
- To want to obey
- One of the most important things we’re called to obey
- A few obstacles that can trip us up when it comes to obeying
Every day, we have a choice — to walk in obedience OR disobedience. Three motivations for choosing obedience are: having to, needing to and wanting to. Knowing God is what helps us to be in that third category of “wanting to.” But not just a general head knowledge of Him. Wanting to obey requires a heart knowledge that fully grasps God. And to move our knowledge of Him from our head to our heart, we need to open our heart to Jesus, spending time praying, studying, listening and worshipping … daily.
Doing these things regularly also helps us know what to obey. One of the greatest commands, second only to loving God, is to love one another (Matthew 22:37-39). How we respond to this command represents God everywhere we go. The way in which we love others can either be a stepping stone or a stumbling block for them in knowing God loves them, and for them loving Him in return.
But, as motivating as that should be, it doesn’t make obedience easy or natural. There are obstacles to obeying God we need to be aware of and overcome — the world and antichrists. 1 John 2:15 warns
“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
Satan knows this. He’s good at enticing us with the things of this world to trip us up in our obedience walk. Other antichrists (those who oppose or put themselves in place of Christ), are also good at derailing our obedience. They do so through false teachings.
This is yet another reason why it’s so important we spend regular time with God in His Word. When we do, not only will we know Him more intimately and want to obey Him, we’ll also know what to obey and be better able to recognize the lies and lurings of the world/antichrists and combat them with Truth!
And to that, we raised their hands and voices in praise, with gladness.
It’s been a blessing to be here with you this week,
Reflect and Respond:
What’s one thing you’ve learned about God this week that’s helping you WANT to obey?
