Hi, friends! It’s weekly recap time!
This week’s theme: Walk in Faith
Our memory verse: “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4 (NIV)
Reading Recap: When it comes to walking in faith, have you ever been tripped up by fear or false teachings? I’m guessing you're nodding your head here with me. But this week, Wendy helped us recognize these “foes of faith” and realize we need not stumble or fear.
If we want to walk in the fullness of God’s love, our faith, our trust and confidence in God and His love, matters. Satan knows this, so he doesn’t want us to know and believe the truths that teach us the depths of God’s love. He knows truth equips us to defeat lies and live in victory ... live in love. So he utilizes false teachers/teachings to attempt to lead us astray.
In 1 John 4, John aims to expose and protect the church (and us) against fear and false teachers, expressing the importance of holding everything up to the truth of God’s Word. And as Wendy Blight points out in I Am Loved, we can do this through Bible study.
“Bible study equips us to distinguish truth from lies.”
As we study God’s Word, we can learn about the truth of His love for us and how to love others, from the example of God’s love. And what better example do we have than Jesus! By observing and noticing how and who Jesus loves, we too can learn to love as God commands.
We can also learn from the expression of God’s love. God expressed His unconditional, sacrificial love when He sent His only Son to die for us on the cross … while we were still sinners! And what should our response to His gift be? To love one another! (1 John 4:11)
In our fallen nature, loving one another as God loved us can be tough. But God doesn’t expect us to love with our own strength. We have the empowerment of God’s love to help us — the Holy Spirit!
The enemy can throw the “foes of faith” at us by attempting to magnify our fears and thwart Truth with false teachings. But with the “3 E’s” of God’s love, with these “friends of faith,” we have nothing to fear! With God, we CAN walk confidently in faith ... in love.
Reflect and Respond:
What have you learned from studying the “3 E’s” of God’s love that’s helping you walk more confidently in faith?
