On April 8, 2024, the sun gradually dimmed as the moon slid into place — an impossible sight, as though our solar system’s brightest star were being smothered into darkness.

Insects stopped buzzing. Birds fell silent. The air grew noticeably colder. My family and our neighbors huddled in our front yards, holding our breath as daylight disappeared for 229 seconds.

Then, slowly, the moon began to shift. Light broke free. The sun blazed again, undiminished, reminding us no shadow could ever extinguish its power. Children and adults alike clapped and cheered, relieved the moon had not remained fixed over the sun in this total eclipse.

It felt unsettling to watch the sky go dark, however briefly. Thankfully, Scripture tells us we have something even more dependable than the star that warms our planet:

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35).

Jesus spoke these words between His triumphal entry into Jerusalem and His arrest later during Holy Week. He spent time teaching in the temple, confronting religious leaders, and reframing God's law with His way of love.

Religious leaders were watching closely. Tensions were rising. And still Jesus spoke with calm authority, declaring that even if the universe itself were shaken, His words would remain.

Jesus is the Word who shaped the world (John 1:1-3; Genesis 1:3) — and He is still reshaping it with His love.

To some, His words sounded impossible or offensive. God becoming man? Light stepping willingly into darkness? God Himself dying to rescue the humans He loves? Preposterous. As unthinkable — and as threatening — as the sun going out.

So they plotted to silence Him.

Yet Jesus did not retreat. He kept teaching. Kept speaking truth. Kept shining light.

The Light of the world does not flicker when shadows fall.

Like the sun during an eclipse, Jesus’ power was not diminished by the shadows gathering around Him. Though opposition pressed closer, His words remained steady, unmovable, and true.

Holy Tuesday invites us to sit in that tension — to trust God's light even when shadows press in around us. To believe the words of Jesus even when circumstances suggest otherwise.

Because the Word who spoke light into existence cannot be undone by darkness.

When life feels shaky and our days grow dark, Jesus never does. We can cling to Him, assured He will never change, never leave, and never fail.

As steady as we imagine the cosmos to be, God’s Word is more dependable still. Nothing in heaven or on earth can keep Jesus from achieving His purposes or His promises. The universe may tremble, but the Word of God does not.

Even when heaven and earth pass away, His words will remain — and with them, the promise of a glorious new world filled with His light that no darkness will ever overcome.

Jesus, Light of the world, when shadows fall and certainty fades, help me trust Your unchanging Word. Strengthen my faith to believe that even in darkness, You remain steady, powerful, and good. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
